The Great Wall at Badaling

Today we climbed almost to the top of the Great Wall at Badaling which is a little over an hours drive outside of downtown Beijing. We toured with our guide-extraordinaire, Sy (in the photo on the right).

Sy pulled up almost to the front door and parked and then just cleared it with a friend of our agency who works there and gives special privileges like this. Lots of people selling things and the trick really is not to say anything, not even "no thank you."

We didn't climb all the way to the top because it was very cold, very steep and we didn't want to knock ourselves out before we get our boy -- TOMORROW! The Great Wall of China is 5000 km and began being built in 600. It's the only man-made structure that can be seen from space by the astronauts. It was entirely awe-inspiring to have seen and touched it -- to stand on bricks that were put there by human hands so long ago.
